MUM'S THE WORD | Meet Julia Matthews of Two Islands

julia two islands saben mothers day

After meeting Julia, it’s clear to see she is a woman who has her s#%t together. Witnessing her and partner Cam seamlessly juggle bottle feeding, dressing, changing and re-dressing twins Clementine and Delilah with the same precision of a Formula 1 pit crew; all while ensuring Lenny has enough snacks and distractions to keep him content, left us in awe at our Mother's Day shoot.

It’s little wonder she’s successfully running a business while staying glam and grounded.

From nurturing 3 children and growing her business @twoislandsco, we ask Julia what advice she has for parents raising multiples and how she balances her needs, with the needs of the kids*

*spoiler alert, the kids come first

Tell us about yourself, your journey and what led you to become the women you are today?

I am a mother of 3 and the founder of Two Islands, a health wellness and beauty brand who make dietary supplements with a focus on women’s health and beauty.  My background is in nutrition and Two Islands came about as I wasn’t able to find a plant protein that ticked all of the boxes for me so I decided to create one myself.  I have a real passion for helping people feel their best and have a bit of an obsession with formulating products.

What does motherhood mean to you?

Everything! Privilege, responsibility, purpose, fulfillment, hard work and that indescribable love that knows no boundaries.

Tell us about your 3 kids; What are they like, the things you cherish about them and what they’ve taught you…

Lenny is the love of my life, he is nearly 3 and full noise. He’s funny, confident, insanely smart, adventurous, sensitive and a real boy. I didn’t think I could love anyone as much as him until his sisters came along.

Delilah and Clementine are my 6 month old twins who couldn’t be more different in looks or personality. Delilah is a chiller, nothing bothers her and she is very observant. Clementine is always smiling, very needy, super social and likes to know what is going on at all time, if she isn’t in someone’s arms she will be squawking away.  They have taught me to be patient, to be more organised and to slow down.

Clementine and Delilah are your youngest. How has it been being a mum of multiples?

It has been a lot easier then I imagined and then what others told me it would be like. Cam and I are very fortunate that the girls are relatively chill and I am lucky to have Cam working from home while I have been on maternity leave as an extra set of hands has been crucial for us to ensure the wheels don’t fall off.

Is Lenny obsessed with his little sisters?

Yes and no – most of the time he will be very sweet and kind with them and other times one of the girls will get a finger bitten or a foot pulled.  It’s been a massive adjustment for Lenny so we are being patient while also ensuring the girls are safe.

What’s one word you would use to describe each of them?

Lenny is funny, Delilah is shy and Clementine is friendly.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

If you try to control everything, and then worry about the things you can't control, you are setting yourself up for a lifetime of frustration and misery.

What advice do you have to share with someone who has multiples?

Team work! Being aligned with your partner as to how you will parent your children and setting up routines to support each other was key for our family to ensure things ran as smooth as possible.

How do you balance the needs of your kids with your own?

At the moment, I don’t really, at least not in the way that I used to when I had no children.  The girls are still so little, and with 2 of them plus a toddler it means 3 people are my priority and then myself. It’s temporary and I know as they get older and a bit more independent things will change. I am back at work full time which means 8 or so hours of the day I get to spend the day with adults, it has been dreamy and just what I needed.

Any words of wisdom for parents out there who need to take time out for themselves.

Lean of friends or family to watch your children so you can go and do the things you want.  If you are the type of person who gets touched out easily or mentally just need that alone time, prioritise it.

SABEN - What bag have you chosen and what drew you to this one?

Tilly's Big Sis in Brown – I chose it for my Mum as she never buys anything for herself and she deserves to have her own piece of Saben

Any last words, thoughts or feelings you would like to share on the love, the joy, the juggle and the struggle of Motherhood.

It’s beautiful chaos!
